Who am I?

When I was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in October, 1969, I refused to go. I asked Commissioner Bowie Kuhn to declare me a free agent, but he denied my request. So I filed suit on January 16, 1970, claiming that baseball's reserve clause violated antitrust laws. The Federal district court rejected my appeal for free agency, and the Supreme Court upheld the decision on appeal. Although I lost my battle, the players eventually won the war.

The Cardinals signed Bob Gibson in 1957 right out of college.
