Pivotal World Series Moments
Pearson Outpitches Hubbell
1936 World Series Game 4: New York Giants @ New York Yankees
Needing a victory to even the Series at two games apiece, Giants player-manager Bill Terry sent his "Meal Ticket," Carl Hubbell, to the mound for Game 5. "King Carl" won Game 1 against the Yankees, 6-1.
The Yankee starter, Monte Pearson, was traded to the Bronx Bombers by the Cleveland Indians before the 1936 season. Yankee fans criticized Manager Joe McCarthy for dealing Johnny Allen, a popular starter, to the Indians in return. Allen had posted a 17-4 record in his first season with the Yanks in 1932, but a sore arm and constant demands for a raise led to his trade. As the season progressed with Pearson on his way to a 19-7 record, the fans embraced him as the Yanks' second-best starter.
